It is surprisingly large and spacious yet manages to be cosy and welcoming with a wood-burning stove at its heart. Despite having the comforts of modern living, it still retains an air of history.

Standing at the front gate on a windy night with the choppy waters of the loch lit up in the moonlight and the forest rustling behind, it is easy to imagine oneself in a bygone era.

For the hillwalker there are 22 Munros in the area along with many other smaller, but no less awesome, hills.

For the rambler the choice is extensive, ranging from gentle strolls along the lochside accompanied by the sounds of lapping waves, to hiking through deserted glens, up to hilltop lochans, alongside babbling burns and cascading waterfalls.

Being three miles from the A87 means a lot of the north west Highlands and Islands are within reach. For those wishing to tour by car the choice is vast.

Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most photographed castles in Scotland, is a short drive away and is well worth a visit.
